RE: Fueling up at Flying J

Flying J in Barstow, CA where I usually fill, is 24c higher today than local station near me.???All fuel in Barstow is more expensive. What are you going to do, drive over 100 miles to get it cheaper? You have to pay extra for having the convenience of a station out in the middle of nowhere. :)

RE: Tire close call

Here is a link for more information on the recall. I have noticed on our two 2008 Saturns they are using a plastic valve stem that is bolted on, just like the metal ones. I think most new cars (especially Ford) have a pressure monitoring system. I don't know about the trucks. I am thinking about one for our MH. On our last trip I hit a curb and gouged out a 3 inch chunk of rubber. I did not know about it until we got home. We were lucky, it did not loose pressure and we only drove about 10 miles on it.

RE: Enclosed versus Open Underbelly

We had TTs with open bellies and one that was covered. As far as MPG, there was no difference; contrary to the sales pitch. The enclosed underbelly did make maintenance more difficult but it kept everything much cleaner. I think some enclosed underbellies actually circulate warm air to help during winter, if you are in a cold climate that may help.

RE: EZ Pass transponder

We always just throw it on the dash. One day in PA we did not have it in the MH so we stopped to pay. It said we had already paid so I stopped and waited for the tollbooth person to help. It turned out we had it in the toad and it could read it all the way back there. I held up traffic for a few minutes and people were not happy. As someone else said, make sure you register all of your vehicles in case there is a problem. In MD, you can even "run" the gate and they will scan your plates and charge your EZPass account. I would not recommend that but that is what they say in the brochures.

RE: How long do you store fresh water

We fill our tank from a well at our house so it does not get any chemicals. I add bleach when filling it. I usually will not go more than a month without dumping it and refilling. Have not had any problems with bacteria. Except for the winter, I keep it at least 75% full. I like to have the water as a backup for the house. We have been told to store at least 50 gal of water for emergencies, the MH stores at least 80. Only needed it after a hurricane and during power outages.
BTW. I felt really dumb until someone on the forum said how to put bleach into the tank. Hook your hose to the RV first. Then pour the bleach into the hose. Then hook the hose to the spicket and fill up the tank. Only takes a few ounces of bleach depending on the size of your tank.

RE: When do you need trailer/toad brakes?

Another factor in towing a vehicle is how much weight can your MH take at the hitch. This would not be a vertical force but the horizontal force of toad if you try to stop without brakes. I crawled under my rig and noticed that the frame on the chassis has an extension welded to it and then the hitch is bolted to the extension. I feel better having brakes on my toad. I don't even want to think of the forces on the hitch, tow bar, baseplate, etc.; if I did not have brakes. There may actually be restrictions published my your chassis manufacturer.

RE: RVing is cheaper than car & motel, cost calculation

My family just went to Washington state (from MD). Son just returned from tour in the dessert. The cost in the rv would have been $3000 for gas, plus food and lodging. Airline tickets were $1800. Sounds like a no brainer. They ended up spending another $900 to modify the tickets and about $1000 for hotels. If I could have taken two weeks off, I would have taken the rv.

RE: Encrypted WIFI ?

Before spreading doom and gloom, please provide an example where encrypted WiFi has been compromised. I am not saying it cannot be done but has it been done. First the hacker would have to be close enough to intercept the signal, WiFi has a limited range. Then they would have to spend the effort to isolate your traffic and decode it. The rewards are much greater by hacking into a department store system and capture credit card info or into government system and get personal information.
And what makes snail mail any more secure? All they have to do is steam open the envelope, read the information, reseal and forward the mail. So, you think all USPS employees are honest? 99.9% are but it only takes one bad apple.
Be cautious but do not be paranoid.

RE: Tire replacement in So. Maryland?

I called Chesaldine Tires. They can replace the tire for $475 with mounting. They have to use Equal Beads because they cannot balance the tire, not a problem.

RE: Tire replacement in So. Maryland?

I have done business with most of these tire dealers and do not think they have the experience to work on heavy duty truck tires. Most don't even have the space in the parking lot for my rig. Wal Mart is about the only one that can get the rig in their garage. The local Workhorse repair facility (Bell Motors) may be able to mount the tire. I will give them a call. We also have some garages that work on school buses, I am sure they could handle it. Maybe someone who has experience with the local businesses could help. Thanks for the reply.

Tire replacement in So. Maryland?

I just noticed that I have a large tear in the sidewall of a rear tire.:S I hit a curb going into the Food Lion on the way home, must have happened then. Tire did not loose pressure. Anyway, now I have to replace it. I have 245/70 19.5 Michelin XRV tires so I assume I have to match them. Anyone know of a tire installer for RVs in southern Maryland?

RE: 50 amp service ?

Most home generators have a twist lock plug for the 50 amp service. Even if it does, you should be able to find or build an adapter. With the generator running check the voltages using the instructions on this link. The information on this page should help you.

RE: Where can I get AMBER tail light lens?

You may find that the lens comes from a normal passenger car. The rear lens on our Winnie is from a Toyota Camry. Take a picture of the lens to a mall, look around at the parked cars, and maybe you will find a match. Hopefully you are not too suspicious or the mall caps may wonder what you are doing. :o

RE: TT crash, Gumball rally

Go to full screen and watch the black car in front of the video car. Within the first second of the vid, it looks like it hits a dip. This coupled with the slight turn the road is taking may (and I say 'may') have been the start of it all.Looking closely it appears something was in the road or on the shoulder. The car right behind the trailer suddenly veers and brakes just before the trailer starts to swing. The TV may have jerked the steering wheel trying to avoid something, starting the oscillation.
This happened to use once when my wife was driving. We had a 30' TT behind a Dodge CTD with Reese DC. Road dipped on one side starting the swing. DW tried to compensate (I know, wrong thing). I finally reached over and grabbed the steering wheel to stop her. It settled down and we were OK. She forgot all about the manual trailer brakes and did not quite understand why that would help. We traded for a fiver within two weeks.

RE: What will future RVs be like? (opinion)

IMHO, the biggest problem we have right now is the frontal area of our RVs; be it a TT, 5er, or Class A. Our MH is very nice but you could make it just one foot shorter and not have much impact in interior space. Why does it have to be over 12' tall? Cut the height and that will help with mileage. After getting up to speed, most of the energy used going down the road is pushing air out of the way. In the short term we could still use the same chassis and improve mileage. In the long run we could look at the European examples and integrate the chassis and coach to make them smaller yet give the same amenities. The biggest hurdle - cost. Look at the cost of an Airstream - very nice trailer, efficient but very expensive. I had to make the same decision when buying a new MH - get diesel and save on fuel or get gas and save on initial cost.

RE: Trailer "suck"

We have towed everything from a pop up to a fifth wheel and now drive a Class A. I don't think I felt the effect with the pop up but I have felt it with everything else. The difference with the DC or Hensley is that some of the lateral force on the trailer is transferred to the tow vehicle (instead of swaying). This is intentional but can be a bit frighting at times. I noticed when towing with a Toyota Tundra that the tires made a big difference. The P rated OEM tires were actually rubbing off rubber from the sideways forces. Changing to LT tires really helped. We even feel the "suck" in the Class A but it is very controllable. Actually I think we now cause people to feel the effects, so now we may be the bad guys.

RE: Allison Transmission question

Here is a link to specs on the different Allison transmissions. There are other differences between the two that you should consider. The gear ratios are different, that may affect your mileage. The 3000 also has a much tighter range of engine RPM, will that be OK with the 5.9? It is interesting that the 1000 is sold with engines that are outside of the Allison specs. My MH has the 8.1 GM engine that has more HP that allowed.

RE: For my RV Parking

Nice but if it rains, it'll colapse. Flat roof top and no pitch for water to drain off.It doesn't rain in AZ. ;)
Actually they may have used a material that lets water through. The main objective is to keep the sun off, not rain. We used that material on a deck when we lived in CA.
